Apple’s 45 Million iPhone Goal
Apple’s launch of the iPhone was more than a success. Being available on only network not only gave Apple a great sales pitch, but it gave AT&T a lot of business. Now, Apple has set a goal to sell 45 million iPhones. How can they sell so many phones on only one network? Well, the answer is simple. They originally signed a 1.5 o two year contract with AT&T, which means they can eventually sell to other networks.
By making people buy the phone directly from Apple, they do not have to worry about cell networks selling the phones for cheaper than the suggested retail price. Apple gets to control the quality of the phone, the price and the software updates for the phone, which will make people want to buy the phone. Apple has a good name, and by keeping the product in the ‘family’ they will make sure that it lives up to its name.
Today the web is alight with speculation as to how Apple will sell 45 million iPhones in 2009. The catalyst for this speculation is Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster who continues to stand by a prediction made in June 2007 (weeks before the iPhone went on sale) that by 2009 Apple will be shifting iPhones at a rate of 45 million a year.
Apple has more ideas for selling even more iPhones as well — they are planning on releasing a smaller 3GB version of the iPhone and lowering the price. I am not sure that Apple is going to be able to take the cell phone monopoly, because there are too many people who want a cell phone for one purpose — talking. They don’t need all of the extras.
What do you think, will Apple be able to take over the cell phone monopoly and cell 45 million iPhones per year?

It is not correct that Apple has set a goal of selling 45m iPhones. That number is purely based on speculation by an (enthusiastic) analyst. The only goal Apple has stated is to sell at least 10 million iPhones in the calendar year 2008. They most likely have a minimum goal for 2009 but no one outside Apple knows what is is.

Apple’s never said that they’ll sell 45K iphones.
