True NBA Fans (Sports Nuts)

This is the time of year when there are meaningful NBA games almost nightly. At a local beverage establishment, hundreds of basketball fans gather to follow the playoffs. That is to be expected. However, there is a group of loyal fans for whom this is the very best time of the year.
It would be almost an understatement to say these are ‘hardcore fans’. One may consider them to be almost basketball historians. - In this region, there are ‘classic’ games that are shown all year. These are games that are well remembered by basketball fans. Some of this group, ranging from about forty to a hundred and twenty people, have seen some of these classic games for countless number of times. They know when a meaningful play will happen, who makes a monumental blunder, how a certain sequence will unfold…
They know a particular game as a movie fan knows a favorite film. These are true fans with almost an encyclopedic knowledge of what happened to whom and when. It is really quite amazing and entertaining to observe them watch a game. The sport forges a kinship among such a diverse group of people. They know each other’s favorite team, favorite player and favorite beverage.
There is a diversity of people of all ages. It would be a wonderful natural laboratory for so many sociological inquiries. The sociologist, along with her husband, are busy though… cheering and enjoying a historical Celtics run.
