New Fee Charges for Luggage at Continental Airlines
Continental Airlines resisted as long as possible. Now it will join other air carriers in charging for checked luggage:
“Continental Airlines, the nation’s fourth-largest airline, will join other carriers in charging some economy-class passengers a $15 fee for checking a first bag. The policy applies to tickets purchased as of Friday, Sept. 5 for travel after October 7 in the United States, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands and Canada.”

For the moment, first class and business class passengers are exempt from this first bag fee. The first class passengers and business class passengers are the last customers that an airline wants to antagonize. These are the regular customers and represent an income stream that the carriers cannot afford to lose.
