Killed Over a Cigarette

In March, I posted an article about a kid who was killed over a video game.  I did not think that it could get worse than this, but once again I am baffled by a news story within the United States.  A woman was shot in the head, in Baltimore, for refusing to give a man a cigarette.

29-year-old Dawn Shipley and a male friend were approached by a man asking for a cigarette shortly before 1 a.m. Saturday, according to police. When he was refused, the man drew a gun and shot Shipley. Her friend was not hurt. (FoxNews)

Now, this story has two issues.  Obviously, the person who did the shooting has some problems.  Whether they are anger issues, a psychological condition or so be it.  In that sense, something is definitely wrong.  The other issue, which might draw some negative feedback is that the woman should have given the man a cigarette.  I am not saying that you should give things to anyone who asks, however if someone comes up to you and looks threatening — you should give in to what they want.  Call the police later and deal with the repercussions that way.  A cigarette is not worth your life.  If it is something as simple as handing over a cigarette to save your life, then by all means do it.

I do not believe that the story was as black and white as I make it seem, however.  There are more issues to be factored into the problem above.  These are conditions that we will never know.  Did the person look threatening?  Was his gun visible when he asked for the cigarette?

In the end, on either side of the story, be safe.  A cigarette is not worth taking someones life, nor is it worth losing your life.
