The Facebook Craze

Although the popular social network Facebook opened its door to the public not long ago, the popular user group still seems to be ‘kid’ in college.  This is something that I do not see changing any time in the near future — the network was originally created for college students, with the purpose that they can stay in touch with their friends after high school and college.

I am a user of Facebook, and I keep my account completely secure.  Only those who I approve as my ‘friends’ can see inside my profile.  This is something everyone should do — it is easy and can keep you out of trouble in the future.  However, that is not the main purpose of this blog.  I want to focus on the obsession that some people have with social networking, and in particular with Facebook.

The ‘fad’ has taken over most college campuses.  For example, at any one time I can walk around a given computer lab on campus and point out at least ten people on Facebook.  In large lectures, from the second or third row, I can usually spot two or three people on Facebook.  This is does include the other 480 people who are sitting behind me.  I am sure there are at least twenty per cent of them doing something other than taking notes.

The networking site has become a community in its own these last few months.  I can track my friends updates, read the posts they are putting on others walls, and instant message them all from one screen.  It is a very interesting site — however it has gone away from its original idea — communication.  The basic features used to be enough, now there are hundreds of applications that are being pasted all over people’s profiles.  The site is becoming more and more like MySpace.  Oddly enough, there are a good portion of the users who do not want the applications or the nifty features — that is why they came to Facebook in the first place.

It just goes to show that no matter how much a current user base likes a concept — if money is involved, the concept will evolve to attract more attention.  Even if it means upsetting the ‘originals’.
