Internation Press Coverage of the Presidential Election
While President Bush’s domestic poll numbers drop to new lows, the international community watches the American election process. The public image of the United States has plummeted in recent years and Americans are hoping that this will be corrected by a new administration.
The election process, however, has not booster the American image. An example is the election coverage from The Australian:
“…Palin is the queen of misinformation, delivered with faux folksiness as authentic as a three-dollar note. She is not the pit-bull in lipstick of popular myth; she is Deputy Dawg with a forked tongue, engaged in a war against intelligence.
Those falling for this act are her collateral damage. Barack Obama did not pal around with terrorists. He did not vote to increase the tax burden on families making $US42,000 a year, or vote 94 times to increase taxes.”

This characterizes the tone of the international press coverage. And whether Republican, Democrat or independent, every American should be concerned about America’s image. The present economic problems will need a global approach. It is unfortunate that, as the presidential election enters its final month, the international press is comparing the United States with ‘banana republics’ where lies, fears and hate monger characterize elections.
