Firefox 3.0: An Improvement on System Resources
As a rule, I tend to shy away from beta testing. The main reason is that beta releases can do mysterious things to one’s machine. However, I was anxious to test out Firefox 3.0 and add my input. I have had one major complaint about Firefox up to this point. That complaint is that it slowly munches on memory and only releases that memory when Firefox is closed. To find that there are low resources in the midst of doing some work is more than annoying.
For this reason, I wanted to see if this issue has been addressed in Firefox 3.0. I have has several occasions where Firefox 3.0 has been running for about eight to nine hours. The memory resources have not eroded significantly. It is not anywhere near the memory drain that I experience in the present release. I have yet to let Firefox 3.0 run beyond the nine hour marks, so please take these as limited observation.
Nevertheless, Walt Mossberg from The Wall Street Journal seems to like this new Firefox browser:
“…My verdict is that Firefox 3.0 is the best Web browser out there right now, and that it tops the current versions of both IE and Safari in features, speed and security. It is easy to install and easy to use, even for a mainstream, non-technical user…”

That is high praise from Mr Mossberg. And for those who read his column regularly, Mr Mossberg is not one to be impressed easily.
The memory issue is a determining factor for me. If Firefox 3.0 is memory sensitive and will release memory, instead of maintaining a claim on those resources, then it may have many users returning and giving it another try.
