The New Wave of Medicine

Having to take prescription pills every day can get bothersome, especially if you have to take some in the morning, afternoon, and at night.  Scientists are looking into a way to solve this issue by using viruses and bacteria to deliver the medicine for you.

Professor Simon Carding of Leeds’ Faculty of Biological Sciences has adapted a bacteria in our own bodies to make it produce a treatment for Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD). Bacteria and viruses have been used before to deliver drugs in this way, but Professor Carding has solved the major problem with this kind of treatment: he uses a sugar to ’switch’ the bacteria on and off. By eating the sugar, a patient will set the medicine to work and then can end the treatment simply by stopping consumption of the sugar.

The only real problem is that viruses and bacteria produce the needed drug non-stop.  Most conditions require an exact amount of the drug to be in the body — a continuous supply could be harmful.  This concept is a genius idea and I have a feeling that it will become more popular in the next few years.  Perhaps this is the new wave of compound medicines.

You have to admit, it would be nice to be able to take your medicine by mixing it into your breakfast or other meals.
