Local University Does Its Part to Go Green
With the summer heating up (literally, might I add), it can be tough to get through the day without the air conditioning. With increased use of your air conditioning, you are not only raising your electricity bill — but you are adding more carbon dioxide into the environment. To try and cut carbon emissions the University of Arizona in Tucson is using a different way to generate cooler air.
…The University Thermal Ice Storage Project, an award-winning chilled water production and distribution system that spends the evening and early morning hours freezing water that is then used to cool buildings across the main campus and at the Arizona Health Sciences Center. The process moves the bulk of the UA’s electrical load from the hot daytime hours to the cooler nighttime hours.
The process of shifting the use of electricity to the cooler hours of the day saves the university almost $30,000 per month. It also helps reduce the amount of green house gas released by the university. Now, this isn’t something you can exactly implement at your house around the world — however there are a few things that you can do.
- Run your washer/dryer/dishwasher in the early morning or late evening hours — it will not make your house as warm
- Buy some fans to cool individual rooms and only run the A/C when you are sleeping
- Don’t run the AC while you are not home. If you have a pet or other animal who needs to stay cool during the day, set up a fan or two in the house — or set the AC to around ~82 degrees.
With a little bit of thinking ahead, you can lower your A/C bill by a fairly large number every month.
