TSA Friendly Laptop Bags
Every geek who has been on an airplane has suffered through having to unpack their backpack and putting it in its own bin for x-ray screening at the airport. It seems that TSA is getting tired of the delay that this causes, and it now going to start supporting certain types of “checkpoint friendly” laptop bags.
To help streamline the security process and better protect laptops TSA has recently encouraged manufacturers to design bags that will produce a clear and unobstructed image of the laptop when undergoing X-ray screening. A design that meets this objective will enable TSA to allow laptops to remain in bags for screening.
This is a great idea, however with airlines becoming more and more strict with checked baggage, my carry on items are going to have more than a laptop in them. Since I now have to pay to check a bag, I will have to pack some supplies in my carry on bag to avoid checking two bags. This means that I will still have to dig my laptop out of the bag and submit it for x-ray scanning.
This is a great idea on TSA’s part, but because of the airlines, it probably will not make any difference.
