ADD and Ritalin

Attention Deficit Disorder or ADD for short is one of the few conditions that is over diagnosed in many children.  Many parents think that just because their child has issues concentrating or because their child is hyperactive, that their child has ADD.  While some parents may be right, most are not.  Recently a British teenager killed himself after having his prescription for Ritalin increased.

A British teenager who recently had his prescription for Ritalin increased committed suicide by hanging himself, it is being reported.According to the Daily Mail, Anthony Cole, 15, was prescribed the drug six years ago when he was diagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). I am not saying that Ritalin should not be used for any child/teenager.  However if someone in your family is taking medicine and it drastically changes their mood — especially in a negative way, you should consider talking with their doctor.   Since ADD/ADHD is one of the over diagnosed conditions — it is best to try all other options before going straight to the prescription medicine.  That comment goes true for most medical conditions.

If you can avoid prescription medicine — by all means do it (as long as whatever path you choose keeps you healthy).
