Returning Items Without a Receipt

I recently bought a friend a birthday present online, and after realizing she already had when I had bought, I got into thinking. Instead of returning the item online (and having to pay shipping), I ventured to local stores that sold the same item (Best Buy, Target and Circuit City). The result was fairly surprising.

For all three stores the same story was used. We said that the item was a gift from a friend in another country. By saying this, we hoped that the reason for not having a receipt would be clear and valid.

Upon arriving at Best Buy, we were told that the company policy for returns without a receipt was limited to $50 dollars. This applies even with store credit. Target has the same policy, but their limit is $25 dollars. Circuit City was the only company that really did not care about the return.

The policy is one of the worst I have ever seen. Returns without receipts should always be given store credit — nothing else. By returning the item to a store and getting store credit, the company is not losing any money. They will make money back for the sale of the returned item. There are not many items that will sell for less than $50 at Best Buy, so returns without a receipt is nearly impossible.
