Laptop Search and Seize Policy at Border Crossings
There is no laptop privacy at border points. Customs officials at border entry points are allowed to search and seize a laptop at their discretion. No stated cause is necessary:
“…We’ve been searching laptops of those who warrant a closer inspection for years. In fact, we’ve taken the unprecedented step of posting online a policy that would typically be reserved for internal purposes. This information is not new and has been publicly debated countless times. Indeed, the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals recently confirmed the constitutionality of suspicionless laptop searches at the border.”

There is no stated time frame in which the laptop will be returned. If one’s laptop is seized, there is no formal means of redress. This search and seizure action is supported by court ruling. It supersedes any notions of civil rights.
