Health Watch: Dirty Supermarket Conveyor Belts
Ever look at the conveyor belts in the supermarket? Have you never noticed some of the sticky stains and cringed? Fox News investigates some supermarkets in the Chicago area. (link)
One example of bacteria found on the conveyor belts is the coliform bacteria:
Coliform bacteria are the commonly-used bacterial indicator of sanitary quality of foods and water. They are defined as rod-shaped Gram-negative organisms which ferment lactose with the production of acid and gas when incubated at 35-37°C. Coliforms are abundant in the feces of warm-blooded animals, but can also be found in the aquatic environment, in soil and on vegetation. In most instances, coliforms themselves are not the cause of sickness, but they are easy to culture and their presence is used to indicate that other pathogenic organisms of fecal origin may be present.
Next time you go grocery shopping — think twice about what you put on the conveyor belt. Avoid potentially bad situations by putting your fruits and vegetables in plastic bags — the same goes for any raw meat that you buy.
