Shaquille O’Neal as The Big Cactus

It is Opening Night in Phoenix.  Shaquille O’Neal is playing his first game for the Phoenix Suns - against his old team, the Los Angeles Lakers.

There are many sports writers who say that the Phoenix Suns gave up too much to obtain Shaquille O’Neal and that The Big Cactus has very little basketball left.  That will be part of the drama.  This new team, that likes to run and move the basketball, will be a challenge for Shaq.  However, let’s look at some recent history:

It was December 10, 2007.  Shaquille O’Neal played twenty nine minutes.  He scored eighteen points.  He had eleven rebounds.  And surprisingly, he made four out of four foul shots.  Shaquille O’Neal’s team won.  The score was 117-113.  The opponent was…  the Phoenix Suns.

December 2007 was not that long ago.  Those are respectable numbers.  Perhaps the numbers are less than what Shaq would have done in his prime.  However, in Phoenix now, his role is different.  He is ‘The Big Cactus’; and he is out to prove the critics are wrong.
