Sunday: Private Planes Collide

LOS ANGELES, California (CNN) — Two private planes collided Sunday over a Los Angeles suburb, killing four people, including one on the ground, police and the Federal Aviation Administration reported.

The collision occurred about 3:35 p.m. Sunday (6:35 p.m. ET) in Corona, California, about 40 miles east of downtown Los Angeles, FAA spokesman Allen Kenitzer said. (Link)

When I hear about an incident like the one above, I am instantly saddened by the loss of life.  However, once I start thinking about the issue I ask “how does this happen”?  There are supposed to be safeguards that prevent airplanes from colliding.  In the air, all planes are monitored by radar, and an ATC controller has watch over other airplanes in the area.

Even if the weather was bad and the pilots had poor vision, Air Traffic Control would have been able to notify the planes of a possible collision.  These events seem to be caused by not just one bad decision, but numerous.

We will not know exactly what happened until the NTSB finds the black boxes of each aircraft.  Perhaps then, some light can be shed on the problem — and a possible fix can be put into the works for future planes.
