Women’s Soccer Finals at the Beijing Olympics: Game Notes

Some people have suggested that I do a “live blog” of the women’s Olympic gold medal match. However, the venue was too noisy, with a few hundred soccer fans watching the game. And I was not sure that comments would make any sense. So, as a compromise, I did scribble some game notes and some of them are even decipherable. - Yes, it was pen and paper. I didn’t want to risk dropping the laptop with so many people being so exuberant. - So the following are some “live notes” from the early morning soccer match:

  • Hope Solo keeping them in the game.
  • Brazil attackers are so fast - too fast for individual defenders. The USA has to bring more defenders to the ball.
  • Marta is dazzling. It is easy to see why she wins Player of the Year honours.
  • The U.S. defense must miss Cat Whitehill and Leslie Osborne.
  • Formiga is tough - so is Heather Mitts.
  • Marta went by Mitts and Markgraf. It wasn’t even a fair contest. Mitts and Markgraf are world class defenders.
  • Amy Rodriguez is fast - perhaps the fastest American on the pitch at the moment. The defense plays back more because of her speed.
  • Christie Rampone is having a great game. She is going to struggle near the end. This pace will wear on her. It is like constant start and stop sprints.
  • Brazil is so dangerous with each attack. The US has to stop giving away corner kicks.
  • If the US can hang on, this will be the headline story around the planet.
  • The US midfielders are tired.
  • Ouch! That must hurt. Heather Mitts’ head must hurt.
  • Tarpley and Chalupny are going to have nightmares about Cristiane.
  • Pia Sundhage trusts her bench. She has to substitute and she does. Her players are close to exhaustion.
  • Brazil called offside - it was very close. Perhaps a half step…
  • Heather Mitts is bouncing off players - bruises tomorrow.
  • Angela Hucles is crafty - deceptive.
  • Carli Lloyd scores. Need to check but I think Carli was benched in last year’s World Cup play.
  • Brazil is more talented individually. The US is playing better as a team.
  • This is a test of fitness as much as soccer skills.
  • The US hit a post… so close to a two goal lead. I think that was Carli Lloyd again.
  • Brazil is beating the American defenders to the end line but the US is trapping the player there. Brazil is fine with bouncing the ball off the American defender and having a corner kick.
  • Marta - wow! What a move!
  • Heartbreak for Brazil. Their faces tell the story.
  • It seems like the whole US team is back for defense.
  • This is the USA’s Redeem Team… not the pro basketball players.
  • This game will be part of soccer legend.

That’s it. Congratulations to both the team from the U.S.A. and the team from Brazil. The fans are exhausted from watching - and it is just the morning of the day.
