Exploring the Antarctic

The Antarctic is one of the last major unexplored places on our planet, and for good reasons. However, it seems that tons of new species are lurking in the icy waters. Perhaps because it is the last ‘uncolonized’ part of our planet.

WELLINGTON, New Zealand - Scientists who conducted the most comprehensive survey to date of New Zealand’s Antarctic waters were surprised by the size of some specimens found, including jellyfish with 12-foot tentacles and 2-foot-wide starfish. (link)

Finding a new species is always exciting, especially when they are highly adapted versions of ones that already exist. We can only wonder what in the environment has caused them to grow so large, and why evolution has selected these traits amongst thousands.
