Once a Marine, Always a Marine
The popular saying ‘Once a Marine, Always a Marine’ recently took on a new meaning. The saying now goes onto those who have passed away. A marine who completed two tours in Iraq was killed in the United States, over a case of mistaken identity. However, his heart was able to be transplanted to an older, retired Marine.
Troy, 43, of Rockford, served as a Marine in the 1980s. He was dying of an inherited heart condition in 2006 when he received a new heart in a transplant. The donor was 23. Troy didn’t know much more than that. (link)
It is a shame that the donor was killed over a case of mistaken identity. However, his contributions to our freedom can live on in Troy’s body and our memory.
