What Makes an Endangered Species?

There are various species that are on the ‘endangered’ list.  These animals live in all different environments, including land, water and air.  An endangered species cannot be killed or moved from its habitat — unless the move is a life saving effort.  What many people do not know, is what it takes to make the endangered list.

Fish and Wildlife Service Director Dale Hall said his agency, which decides on most proposed listings of endangered species and their critical habitat, has been hamstrung by a slew of lawsuits and has just begun to dig out. He told the House Appropriations interior subcommittee last month that his agency will make decisions about 71 species by Oct. 1 and an additional 21 species a year later. (link)

Adding a species to the endangered list is getting more and more difficult with the laws passed by the Bush administration.  How many species should be on the list, but are not able to be because of these new laws?  The answer, I do not know off the top of my head — however the number has to be growing on a daily basis.
