Watching Allen Iverson
The Denver Nuggets are behind in their playoff series with the L.A. Lakers. The Nuggets trail by two games with the series going to Denver for Game Three. The story line which will receive wide coverage in the media will be how Kobe Bryant scored forty nine points and had ten assists. What will not receive much coverage is the performance that Allen Iverson gave.
Allen Iverson played forty one minutes and had thirty one points. One noticeable element in Allen Iverson’s game is the risks he takes. He puts himself in situations where he knows that he will receive physical contact and absorb physical punishment. And he is knocked to the floor consistently.
The amazing thing in watching Allen Iverson is that the physical punishment does not deter him. He bounced back and has the same competitive will.
This competitiveness has been the hallmark of Allen Iverson’s career. It is well known. However, in the playoffs, the intensity is so much greater and the physical contact is more brutal. He must be playing with injuries.
There are some who point to Allen Iverson’s past confrontations with the law or criticize his off court activities. Although much of that has changed in recent years, many people still associate those things with Allen Iverson. Few, though, can argue with Allen Iverson’s athleticism and his will to win. He simply does not quit. That spirit simply cannot be taught.
