I Don’t Want to be Pink

I saw a Mother’s Day ad today that really annoyed me. The ad was for cellphones, and all of the phones in the picture were pink. When did pink become the only acceptable color for women? I don’t want a pink phone; I want a phone that browses the web, sends and receives email from multiple accounts, and just generally tells the world that I’m a geek.

That’s not the only pink thing that annoys me. I’m a sports fan, married to someone with season tickets to college basketball and two professional baseball teams (one’s National League, one’s American League, so it’s not really a conflict of interest). When I attend a game, I like to show my support by wearing team colors. The new trend in team jerseys, presumably in an effort to draw in more women fans, is to make them pink. That doesn’t help me. How can I declare to the world that I’m a fan of the Baltimore Orioles in a pink shirt? Their colors have always been orange and black. I have a better suggestion - make team shirts in sizes that fit women, instead of only selling them in size medium to XXL. I don’t want to look like I’m wearing my father’s t-shirt, and I want to recognize a fan by their team colors.
