Andrew Bynum Sustains Another Injury

In the short term, it is bad news for the Los Angeles Lakers. Their young center, Andrew Bynum, is injured again:

“Lakers center Andrew Bynum sustained a right foot injury Tuesday against New Jersey and is listed as day to day.

An MRI exam and a CT scan revealed that a small bone spur had chipped off the foot, causing pain and inflammation.”

In the long term, the news could become worse. Because of the weight, bone structure and torque generated, the exceptionally tall professional basketball players are prone to foot, ankle and knee problems. Last season, Andrew Bynum missed the latter part of the season with a serious knee injury. This recent injury may indicate that Andrew Bynum is susceptible to lower extremity injuries. These type of injuries have cut short and/or disrupted the basketball careers of many gifted, tall athletes - for example, Bill Walton, Yao Ming, Greg Oden and many others.

The Lakers count on Andrew Bynum as a defensive presence. He alters shots, block shots and provides key rebounds. The Lakers have invested millions of dollars on the premise that he can stay healthy and play. This latest injury raises questions.
