Parents Charged With Childs Death Due to Diabetes

No parent should have to suffer through the death of their child. It is simply not natural. In our world, it is common for the parents to pass before the children. While that is a painful time for anyone — the situation always seems worse when a child dies before the parents. What is even worse; is when the parents are charged with reckless homicide because their child died due to diabetes.

WESTON, Wis. (AP) — Parents who prayed as their 11-year-old daughter died of untreated diabetes will be charged with second-degree reckless homicide, the Marathon County district attorney said Monday.

Leilani Neumann, 40, told AP previously she never expected her daughter to die. The family believes in the Bible, which says healing comes from God, but they are not crazy, religious people and have nothing against doctors, she said. (WTMJ NewsRadio)

While medical care is available for diabetes, we as a society cannot force treatment on someone when it is not wanted. Since the child was 11 years old, the decisions regarding their medical treatment would lie with their parents. If the doctors believed that the parents were acting against the child’s best wishes, then they should have filed for a court order for CPS to take over in the decision making.

It is horrible that the parents are being charged with a homicide for the death of their child. Essentially they are being charged for having religious beliefs.

    1. I see it a little bit differently than Justin in a few ways. I think while the parents are responsible for sharing their viewpoints with a child, Their choice to not take her to the doctor and to pray for her, seems a bit interesting to me. They shouldn’t be able to choice life or death for her. I know they have the legal ways to choice if it was a situation regarding life support, but this was something completely treatbale that she should have been given a choice to live.

Should it be a charge or murder.. no. Should it be an example that you should have to do everything for your child to save them if you can…. yes.
The doctors should have called CPS, and done something, but if the parents never brought her to a doctor, how can they?

Its a sticky situation, and sadly the outcome of it, wont bring back the little girl that was sadly lost.

    2. Thanks for the comment Corey =)
