The Court Ruling on Tim Donaghy

The disgraced NBA referee, Tim Donaghy, was sentenced today. He will serve time in prison:

“Tim Donaghy the former NBA referee who was in the middle of a betting scandal was sentenced to 15 months in prison today. U.S. District Judge Carol Bagley Amon of the Eastern District of New York said she took Donaghy’s gambling addiction into account, as well as his cooperation with the government’s investigation…”

This may bring to a close an incident that the National Basketball Association (NBA) would like to put in the past. However, for fans, there is a conspicuous lack of details. For example, which games were altered? There are basketball fans who readily can recall an officiating decision that altered a game. The settlement of the Tim Donaghy matter does not detail which games he manipulated the outcome.

The stance that the NBA seems to have taken is that ‘the less said the better’. Some basketball fans will be left wondering which games that their team could have won and would have won, except that the outcome was predetermined. Perhaps the NBA has determined that it is less messy if the fans did not know.
