No Kill Cat Sanctuary

A few weeks ago I posted a blog about a stray cat, Dexter, that I took in. Dexter is FIV+ and for the last few weeks I have been trying to get him into one of the no kill cat sanctuaries here in Tucson, Arizona. I received word tonight that a local shelter will be able to take him in, and care for him. Dexter will be going to Casa de los Gatos, which is one of the few no kill cat shelters in the city.

Dogs and Grass Eating Behaviour

Pica is a craving for unnatural, non-food items. Dogs do enjoy their grass and grass-eating is not always viewed as pica. However, if your dog eats grass excessively and as more than a passing snack, the habit may escalate into a pica. No one really knows why dogs eat grass – it is one of the mysteries of dogs.

Sun Protection for Your Dog

Dogs can and do have sunburn. There may be redness to the skin and some hair loss. The areas most prone to sunburn are the ears, inside of the legs, underside of the dog and the nose. With dogs, there is the concern with reflected ultraviolet radiation. Left on their own, dogs will seek shade when feeling any discomfort. However, when a dog wants to be with you on the beach, boat or whatever outside activity, that shade may not be readily available.

A Scent Trail for the Vision Impaired Dog

Help Save Dexter

This is not something that I do often, however I think it is for a great cause. A five or six year old stray cat recently came into my life — and instead of letting him suffer on the street I decided to try and take care of him. It started with a trip to the vet this morning, where I found out that this cat, Dexter, tested positive for Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV). While similar to the human form, HIV — FIV has no treatment what-so-ever. While the cat is expected to live for many years — he is already showing symptoms of the disease.
